My First Swim Meet EVER

I swam in my first ever swim meet last weekend, probably 30 years too late, but better late than never. It was so much fun! Not sure why I waited so long, but it will not be my last.

Swimming has always been a favorite activity of mine. In the summer as a kid, I could be found in the pool in the backyard during most of the daylight hours. Our vacations were most always to places along the water where we would end up in the ocean until we were water logged or sunburned and then we would head over to the pool. But despite my love for and familiarity of the water the few times that I tried to participate in organized swimming ended up with an unhappy camper. Which was okay because I was occupied on the volleyball court most of the time anyway.

6 years ago I remember picking up the phone to get information about swimming lessons. It was very intimidating as an adult asking for help on something most kids do without thinking. But I am so glad that I did because I had found my new favorite activity. It hasn’t always been easy, but I do try to always make sure it’s fun!

Since that first day of class I have learned how to flip turn, learned to breathe bilaterally (on both sides), swam in open water, gained some speed, and now I have swam in a swim meet. I remember someone telling me to relish my first Ironman because there are so very few things as an adult that we get to do for the first time…so today we celebrate my first swim meet ever,

In life, we sometimes get stuck in a rut and do what we’ve always done but get frustrated when we see the same results. So my challenge to you is to try something new, do something that scares you, try to knock something of the bucket list…you never know who you might meet along the way or how it will change your perspective.
