Day 25: Look Mom, No Harness

Before reading would you take a moment and vote for me to win a free Ironman entry at http://bit.ly/1flSLJY. Thank you very much.

Today was a big day…I am happy to announce that today I finally got to walk on the treadmill without the harness! Woohoo! I have many a friend that will groan about having to run or walk inside on the treadmill, but I was overjoyed when I got the ok today. I really wasn’t expecting it because there is some bruising on my knee which also happens to be a bit swollen, but we were able to attribute the bruising and extra swelling to the time I have spent on the bike lately and that whole clipping motion.

I went a whopping .6 miles in 20 minutes (at that rate it would take me about 14 hours to finish a marathon). When I walk slow enough I have the time to concentrate on the entire step I take with my right leg, and I don’t limp. It’s when I try to hurry through the motion of walking that the hitch in my giddy up comes back. Just another reminder to take things slowly.

It is a bit nerve wracking to walk on the treadmill at PT. It is set up in the middle of the room and you are constantly being watched to make sure you are doing it right. I get why, but at the same time I really do enjoy the benefit of anonymity that comes with being at the back of a pack of runners. But running is still a ways off and I don’t want to get my hopes up with a timeline, so I am going to be content on the progress I am making right now.

Other things I get to do in PT in addition to the 20 minutes on the treadmill include 10 minutes on the elliptical machine, 15 minutes on the bike, two legged squats on the total gym, squat walking from side to side, practicing stairs, and more. Last week we added some horizontal jumping on the shuttle (which is actually work as compared to horizontal running) and this one leg knee bending thing that helps with descending stairs. Today we also added one legged squats on the total gym.

In addition to PT today I spent some time underwater today and I am very happy about that!
